MISSION STATEMENT

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

OUR LOCAL CHAPTER

Since its inception in 1986, the Northwest Indiana Habitat for Humanity has worked to contribute toward Habitat's world-wide goal of eliminating poverty housing.  Through volunteer labor, management expertise, and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates homes with the help of homeowners.

With this volunteer help, Habitat has helped families in the greater NWI area achieve their goals of obtaining simple, decent housing, and with it, attaining new self worth and esteem.  If you would like to learn more about NWI Habitat, volunteer your time, or make a donation please contact us.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

Habitat addresses local housing needs, families receive the benefits of home ownership, stability, security, a sense of dignity and pride and improved control over financial circumstances.  Habitat benefits the community by developing responsible residents who have a stake in the future of their community, bringing up property values and attracting further investment in the community.

It's your wonderful partnership that helped change these families' lives.  And every 24 minutes another Habitat house is completed and another family's life is changed through this partnership.

HOW  IT WORKS

Volunteers are the heart of Habitat for Humanity. Through volunteer labor and tax deductible donations of money and materials, houses can be built or renovated with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.  People from all walks of life are invited to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need.

Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no interest loans.  The homeowner's monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Each family is required to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to build their own home and to help other prospective homeowners build their houses.

After families apply to the proper affiliate, a Family Selection Committee chooses homeowners bases on their level of housing need, ability to repay the loan, and their willingness to become partners in the program.

GET INVOLVED & HELP YOUR COMMUNITY BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Volunteering your time (skilled or unskilled) labor, office work, administration, fundraising, and promotion. We have a special need for those with roofing, framing, drywall, plumbing, electrical skills.

  2. Making a tax deductible contribution or monthly pledge.

  3. Sponsoring a house, donating land, or offering a non-interest loan.

  4. Scheduling a presentation about Habitat for Humanity with your church, school, or other group or organization to interest them in a partnership program with Habitat for
Humanity. An organization could sponsor the labor or the materials or both for an entire house or share with another organization.

If you are willing to get involved in any of these ways, give us a call and we will be glad to have you as part of our team. Thanks!
